This Long Pursuit

Kelly McKaig, from Orbits and Excavations: Stitched Book

“This Long Pursuit” reflects the intertwined lives of Kelly McKaig and Bruce Riley. Partners for 38 years, artists for longer, their visions have taken the form of a double helix with its two strands oriented in their own directions, yet bound together by time and their similar practices of engagement. McKaig works with dyes she prepares from rust and walnuts, with sewing, and edges. Her work stitches the world into itself so it can be reconsidered, often ending in a new shape. Riley's work is similarly process-oriented and highly personal. His studio-based practice is a constantly evolving system where pigments and binders are used to explore surface and mystery. The pursuit is long because it is never over. “The stuff of life is life itself."
